Abstract

Alcohols are prepared by reacting an aluminium alkoxide containing from 2 to 100 carbon atoms in each of the alkoxy groups with methyl alcohol in the presence of a solvent consisting of acetone or acetonitrile or mixtures thereof, to give the corresponding alcohols and an aluminium organic compound, the exact nature of which is not known. Preferably the starting alkoxide has 4-50 carbon atoms in each of the alkoxy groups. The aluminium alkoxide may be used in the form of a solution, e.g. in a hydrocarbon. Preferably at least 8 times the theoretical quantity of methyl alcohol is used and at least 56 moles of acetone or acetonitrile per mole of alkoxide. Specification 767,601 is referred to.
