Abstract
Alcohols containing 2 to 4 C atoms, especially those produced by the hydration of olefins, are purified by distillation in countercurrent contact with at least 5 molar alkali metal hydroxide at a reflux ratio greater than 3 : 1, preferably greater than 4: 1. The example describes the purification of isopropanol.
