Abstract

1,042,288. Ink-ribbons. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. April 26, 1965 [June 5, 1964], No. 17462/65. Heading B6F. [Also in Division B8] A spooled " once only " polyethylene ink ribbon has secured to its outer end 3 a polyvinyl chloride leader 13 which continues the convolution of the ribbon, the inner surface of the leader having an adhesive area 32 connecting the outer end of the coiled assembly with the underlying turn to hold the spool in wound-up state. The adhesive area 32 is formed by a gap cut in the leader, the severed parts 24, 26 being held together by a strip 30 which is adhesive on both sides, one to fix the parts 24, 26 and the other, the outer surface, to attach the leader to a take-up spool. The area 32 is arranged to adhere either to a silvered strip 28 stuck on to the leader 13 or to an underlying coil of the leader itself. In the latter case the leader is made of polyethylene glycol terephthalate. Apparatus for making.-The leader 13 may be made by feeding webs 48, 50, 52 from spools to form the separate pieces 20, 28, 30, Figs. 5a, 5b (not shown). These webs are led over a web 40 of a width equal to the length of the leader. The adhesive on the webs 48, 50, 52 fixes them to the web 40 which is subsequently transversely cut to form the separate leaders. The area 32 is formed by longitudingly cutting a strip from the web 40 as it is led from its spool.
