Abstract

High M.W. linear polyamides are thermo-stabilized by adding 3-9 ppm. of Cu as a copper salt and 200-900 ppm. of an alkali metal or ammonium halide. Polyamides specified are: polyhexamethylene adipamide and sebacamide, polyoctamethylene adipamide, polydecamethylene sebacamide and polycaprolactam. The copper salt may be a water-soluble salt of organic or inorganic acid and may be anhydrous. Salts specified are cuprous iodide and cupric acetate, salicylate, sulphate, stearate, benzoate and nitrate. Halides specified are KI, NH4I, NaCl, KBr and NaBr. These materials may be added before, during or after polymerization. Other additives may be: viscosity stabilizers, e.g. acetic acid, photostabilizers, e.g. manganous acetate, dyes, pigments, plasticizers and delustrants. In a typical Example (1) KI and cupric acetate are added during polymerization under superatmospheric pressure of hexamethylene diammonium adipate in the presence of water and acetic acid. The product is spun into fibres and dyed.
