Abstract

A cosmetic or therapeutic preparation for topical application to the skin comprises an additive in the form of an aqueous and/or alcoholic or oleoginous solution or suspension of a crystalline alcohol-soluble substance isolated by multi-stage extraction of reticular organs of a warm blooded animal. Specified are the spleen, livers and lymphatic glands of cattle, including calves. The comminuted spleen of cattle are extracted with acidified aqueous ethanol, the extract adjusted to pH 6.0, the precipitate removed, the clarified liquid is acidified, concentrated and extracted with benzene. After washing with water and concentration, the extract is dissolved in ether and concentrated until crystals form. The crystals are purified by recrystallisation from acetone and ethanol. The extract may be incorporated in skin creams, face lotions, cleansing creams, shampoos, hairwashes, hair setting agents, hair cream, hair rinsing agents, face powder, face pack, skin powder, foot powder, body powder, make-up, lipsticks, eyebrow sticks, soaps, permanent hair-waving preparations, sunburn creams and oils, nail varnish, hair colouring preparations, corn plasters and adhesive plasters. The other components are appropriate to the cosmetic or therapeutic formulation.
