Abstract

A polymer is claimed per se which consists essentially of: (a) units <FORM:1041870/C3/1> where R is a C8-C20 n-alkyl radical or a radica -CH2CH2Q, where Q is a branched chain C6-C18 alkyl radical and (b) units <FORM:1041870/C3/2> where R1 is a C1-C7 n-alkyl radical or a radical -CH2CH2Q1, where Q1 is a branched chain C3-C5 alkyl radical. The mol. per cent of (b) based on the number of moles of (a) present may be from 0 to 100%. A preferred polymer contains substantially no (b) units and R contains 10-18 carbon atoms. It also contains an average of 20 to 40 (a) units per molecule. The polymers may be used as release agents to prevent adhesion or as lubricating agents for surfaces (e.g. of rubber or synthetic resin). The surfaces may be painted. Examples relate to the preparation of the polymers from methyl hydrogen polysiloxanes and a -olefins using chloroplatinic acid as catalyst.
