Brush-holders; dynamos, regulating; motors, controlling.-Relates to dynamo-electric machines particularly but not exclusively for use in a system for starting an internal-combustion engine in which a four-pole two-brush generator is changed into a four-brush motor and consists in breaking or making a circuit between a brush and an auxiliary contact with which it is furnished before or after the brush has been removed from or brought into contact with the commutator thereby preventing deterioration of the commutator. As shown in Fig. 1, two of the brushes 21, 22 are connected to the battery 19 through series field windings 6, 7 and auxiliary contacts 36, 35. The brushholders 25, 26 are supported on pivots 27, 28, which also support arms 33, 34 carrying the contacts 36, 35. Springs on the pivots 27, 28 hold the contacts 36, 35 pressed against the brushes 21, 22 and maintain the brushes in contact with the commutator. By rotating a shaft 43, which is formed with camsurfaces, the contacts 35, 36 are first separated from the brushes and the brushes then raised from the commutator, rotation of the shaft 43 in the opposite direction bringing about the reverse operations.
