Abstract
1,041,452. Tube walls for furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Feb. 6,1964 [Feb. 8, 1963], No. 5154/64. Heading F4B. A tube wall forming part of a combustion chamber comprises tubes 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), positioned with a pitch between centres of at least three times the outer radius of the tubes, provided with gills 2 welded together to form gas-tight joints 3, and cooling tubes 4 conducting cooling fluid, e.g. water, extending parallel to the wall tubes and adjacent to the gills to limit their maximum temperature. The cooling tubes may be placed in front or behind the tube wall in relation to the incident heat, indicated by an arrow f, have straight or inwardly curving gills and may be attached directly or by gills to the wall. Each gill 2 which may be welded to the tube or formed together with the tube and may contain at least one undulation or recess accommodating a cooling tube. Two or more cooling tubes may protect each joint 3 and may be situated equidistant from the joint, alternatively each cooling tube may form a downcomer for the wall tubes and be protected from direct radiation by an outer coaxial tube. The gills may be of variable thickness and width and extend radially or otherwise from the wall tubes. The diameter of the cooling tubes is preferably half that of the wall tubes.
