Abstract

1,041,305. Cartons; can wrappers. MEAD CORPORATION. Feb. 25, 1964 [Aug. 9, 1963], No. 7868/64. Heading B8C. A wrapper, for packaging articles with recessed ends, e.g. chimed cans, forms an open - ended tubular structure from which retaining tabs, each having an integral web panel formed at one end of their hinges, are struck and folded inwards through 180 degrees to engage the ends of the articles to retain them within the tube. The wrapper, Fig. 5 (not shown), is folded around the cans and secured by interengaging tongues and slots 14-17. The retaining tabs 37-44 are cut in the top and bottom panels and comprise a main portion 40A, Fig. 4, foldable along the line 45, and a web 46 defined by folds 47, 48. When the main portion is folded through 180 degrees and under the wall, the web lies normal to the wall and engages the rim of the can to prevent its easy removal, Fig. 3 (not shown). Tabs 29-32 fold inwards and are doubled over to engage the chime, Fig. 2 (not shown), while tabs 19-21 extend between the two rows of cans from beneath. A tab 56 is cut from the wall 7, its hinge line 57 being above the hinge line 22 of the tab 19, so that when folded upwards it provides a slot for engaging can chimes. The end of the top wall 1 is longer than, and shaped complementary to the end of the side wall, to facilitate staggered cutting of blanks without wastage and to strengthen the top wall. Finger gripping apertures 35, 36 are provided.
