Abstract

1,041,042. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 8, 1962 [Nov. 8, 1961], No. 40080/61. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor provided with a concrete wall penetrated by an opening through which passes a conduit for carrying hot fluid, a fluidcooled jacket is positioned in the opening between the conduit and the wall, the jacket surrounding the conduit and absorbing heat which would otherwise be transmitted to the wall. In Fig. 1 the concrete wall 2 forming a shield for the reactor is formed with an opening through which passes a conduit 6 for carrying hot fluid. The conduit is surrounded by an insulating sheath 16 and by a cooling jacket 8, which is cooled by a liquid (e.g. water) flowing from an inlet 12 to an outlet 14. An annular gap 22 between the jacket and a metal liner 20 set in the concrete wall allows air to be circulated through the opening to cool it and to cool the face of the wall adjacent the reactor. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the wall is part of the reactor pressure vessel and the liner 20 is extended on the inner side of the wall and welded to a domed metal end cap welded in turn to the conduit 6. A layer of thermal insulation formed from metal foil such as stainless steel insulates the portion of the conduit projecting into the interior of the pressure vessel and also partially covers the exposed surface of the end cap. The inner wall of the pressure vessel may be lined with metal sheeting to which the liner 20 is welded at the point where it passes through.
