In a typewriter or like machine, a paperholding roller rotatable and axially displaceable on a graduated rod 6 and guiding the paper on the platen above the line being typed comprises two plastics members 2 3, which are mounted on the rod with only small radial clearance, are spigoted together so as to enclose a circlip 7 axially positioning the roller on the rod, and have injection-moulded thereover a common plastics cover 4 with a smooth or rough surface. A spigot and a recess respectively of the members 2, 3 have such axial dimensions that when on assembly the circlip is placed in the recess and the members 2, 3 are pressed together a cavity 5 remains to allow the roller freedom of movement with respect to the circlip.
