My invention relates to a typewriter and relates particularly to a guide to prevent the paper from curling around the platen.
Heretofore, when typing numerous copies of a work and using numerous carbon sheets interleaved with the copy papers it has been found that after the sheets are revolved about the platen of the typewriter, particularly in damp or rainy weather, that the sheets closest to the platen droop and continue to completely encircle the platen so that the penultimate and the antepenultimate sheets may be spoiled or blurred by the repeated typing over the typing.
It is, therefore, an object of my invention to provide a guide for paper which will prevent the sheets from completely encircling the platen of the typewriter.
Another object of my invention is to provide a paper guide for typewriters which may be embodied in old typewriters or in new typewriters and which will not affect the operation of the machine.
Other objects of my invention are to provide device of the character described, that is easily and economically produced, which is sturdy in construction, and which is highly efficient in operation.
With the above and related objects in View, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a typewriter platen with a paper guide embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of a guide clamp which may be attached to the arms which hold pressure rollers that press the sheets of paper against the platen of the typewriter.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view through the typewriter platen and the paper guide for attachment to a conventional typewriter.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modification of my invention.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of another modification of my invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawing wherein the same reference characters refer to similar parts, I show a typewriter platen, generally designated as A, the typewriter keys and mechanism is not shown as they are of the conventional constructions. My invention may be applied to present typewriters which do not have the non-curling guide thereon or it may be applied and embodied in newly manufactured typewriters.
A complete paper carriage for typewriting machine is not shown, but the paper guiding and supporting rolls l0, I4, and I5, arranged in parallel relation to the platen and journaled in suitable bearings in a carriage frame or in the paper-guiding and supporting apron mechanism for the paper carriage, and the paper-guiding or feeding rolls ill, l4 and iii are located adjacent to the periphery of the platen. The main back paper-guiding plate is generally designated as D, and forms part of the typewriter. A paperguiding arcuate plate l8, may be located between the lower edge of main plate B and roll [6, and another guiding arcuate plate 26 is between rolls i4 and i6, and still another guiding arcuate plate 22 may be between roll l4 and a space bar or scale plate 24.
An auxiliary paper guide, generally designated as D, to prevent curling of the under copies of the sheets around the platen A, comprises an elongated plate 28 extending to the top of the platen A, and is supported on side arms 32.
In typewriters as customarily constructed, the main guide inclines below the normal to the platen, hence to utilize my invention I substitute a main guide B which has a suitable supporting arm 32 at each side thereof. At the end of the arm 32 is a slipover spring clamp 34, 35 whose inwardly beveled ends 34A and 35A pinches upon th side arm 36 of the shiftable roll support 36. The main guide B includes to the uppermost portion of the platen and prevents the drooping and curling of paper C, which is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. In other words, the top of the plate B is inclined from the platen towards the top of D. v
My invention may be made a part of a new typewriter or it may be made as an auxiliary guide to be embodied in an old typewriter.
In Fig. 4, I show a modification of my invention wherein the auxiliary guide B is pivoted at 38 to a clip 40, which pinches the side arm 42. A pair of right angle rest arms 44 are at each side and each arm 44 has a leg 46 resting upon the side arm 42.
In Fig. 1 the rollers l0 and I2 are pivoted on a bracket whose side arms 36 are pivoted to a link 46 which has its other end 48 pivoted to a portion of the typewriter not shown. This construction enables the auxiliary guide B to be moved adjacent the main paper guide D, whereas in Fig. 4, a short arm 42 does not permit the moving up of the auxiliary guide B. However, the modification in Fig. 4 does enable the auxiliary guide B to be moved adjacent the main guide D so that the paper is inserted when G and D are together, but the guide B is moved so that the portion of the paper is fed around the platen between guide B and D but the paper C emerges from contact with the platen on to auxiliary guide B.
The main guide B may be made of plastic, wood, or metal or any other suitable material 3 and it 'may be clamped in position by having fingers come from the top and clip upon the old guide present in the conventional machine.
As anothenmodification of..rny,.invention, the customary paper; guide DI, Fig. ;:may be modifled so that it extends approximately in the position that auxiliary guide B of Fig. 3 now extends. The paper guide DI is constructed so that no paper will curl between it and the platen-Levon though there is sufficient space between the guide,

The paper guide Dl has the junction of the "{DOItiOHS 50,-52, Fig. 5, protrude close to the top of the platen; this reduces toa minimum distance the space between the upper portion of the platen A and the -lower portion ofwhere the ordinary guide D-of 'Figi 3 would' be located. This reduction or blocking of the space adjacent" the top of the platen may be accomplished. by other :means.

In Fig. 5 the paper emerging from the roller can only move upwardly, and not curl around the platen, due to the portion 52 of ,paperguideDl Another;modificationaofemy invention is that rods or fingers of a, narrow width may extend a, from the back, or top, of the guide D towards the -platen to serve the same purpose as guide B.
