Abstract

1,040,914. Heat-resisting boats; lifeboats. WATERCRAFT Ltd., and A. G. W. HALL. April 23, 1965 [Jan. 23, 1964], No. 3059/64. Headings B7A and B7M. A heat-resisting boat, e.g. a ship's lifeboat of the self-righting type, comprises a hull 10 (Fig. 2, not shown) fitted with a canopy 15 which carries a plurality of nozzles 35 through which water is ejected by a pump 37 (Fig. 1, not shown) to wet the exterior surfaces above the water line, the pump being driven by a compressed-air motor 41 which emits the exhaust-air into the interior of the boat to effect ventilation thereof. Compressed-air for the motor is supplied by a cylinder 43 through a pressure-reducing valve 44. The pump has its inlet 38 situated in the lower part of the hull adjacent a keel-plate 12. Air escapes from the interior of the boat through ventilators in the canopy which are closed by pivotally-mounted flaps 33, having counterweights 53 (Fig. 4, not shown), if the vessel capsizes. Valves 54 in the canopy open in response to an increase in the pressure within the boat caused by closure of the flaps. A further plurality of nozzles 58 is provided in the hull adjacent the gunwale to wet the sides of the hull, these nozzles being connected to the pump by pipes 60, 61, a connector 62 and a pipe 40. The nozzles 35 are connected to the pipe 40 by pipes 36 extending from the connector 62. Foaming agent is introduced into the pipe 40 from a source 57. An engine 32 for driving the propeller 31 may be fitted with a canopy 34 which extends upwardly to the adjacent ventilator in the main canopy. Doors 18 in the canopy 15 are situated in register with folding platforms 55 which are mounted on each side of the deck 13. The hull and the canopy may be made of resin-bonded glass-fibres.
