Abstract

Leather is water-proofed by treatment with a solution of the reaction product of 1-4 mols of ethylene oxide with 1 mol of an unsaturated fatty acid, alcohol, amine, acid amide, sulphamide, or mercaptan in an organic solvent. The leather may be treated with 2-25% of the reaction product. A 5-40% solution may be employed. The fatty acid may be decenoic, undecylenic, dodecenoic, oleic, erucic, linoleic, or linolenic acid. The fatty alcohol may be decenol, tetradecenol, or oleyl alcohol. The solvent may be trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene, petrol, toluene, xylene, benzine naphtha, isopropanol, methylethylketone, cyclohexanone, or butyl acetate. The leather may also be treated with silicone oil, hard wax, mono oleyl ester of citric acid, or the reaction product of aluminium alcoholate with an acid ester of phosphoric acid and an organic hydrohydroxy compound.
