Abstract

Unsaturated fatty acid amide derivatives of the formula R1-CO-R2 are obtained from a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acid amides by heating the latter with urea or thiourea in a solvent such as methanol, ethanol or water, cooling the mixture to precipitate the urea or thiourea adducts with the saturated fatty acid amides, filtering off the precipitate, treating the filtrate with water, extracting the resulting water suspension with an organic solvent and evaporating the extract, wherein the radical R1 is an unsaturated natural fatty acid residue and R2 is a substituted amino radical of the formula -NR3R4 or -NR5, where R3 is hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon group containing not more than 36 carbons, R4 is hydrogen or -R3, and R5 is an alkylene or oxygen-containing alkylene radical of not more than 7 carbons. The purification is suitably effected at room temperature to 100 DEG C. and the fatty acid amide starting materials may be obtained by aminolysis of natural fats, e.g. animal and vegetable oils.
