Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of polycarbonates by the polycondensation of a monochloroformate of a dihydric phenol in the presence of a solvent for the monochloroformate and the polycarbonate, condensation is effected in the presence of one or more of an oxide or hydroxide of magnesium or an alkaline earth metal, or an ion-exchange resin containing quarternary ammonium hydroxide groups. The ion-exchange resin is preferably based on a copolymer of an aromatic monovinyl hydrocarbon and an aromatic divinyl hydrocarbon. In a preferred process, a solution of the monochloroformate of the dihydric phenol in a water-immiscible organic solvent which is also a solvent for the polycarbonate is reacted with an aqueous suspension of the oxide or hydroxide of magnesium or an alkaline earth metal or of the ion-exchange resin, possibly in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. benzyltrimethylammonium chloride. Examples describe the production of the polycarbonate of bisphenol A.
