Abstract

1333812 Polycarbonates BAYER AG 2 Sept 1971 [19 March 1971] 40982/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] The invention comprises 1,4-bis-(4,4<SP>11</SP>-dihydroxy - triphenyl - methyl) - benzene. This compound may be prepared by condensing 1,4- bis-(α,α - dichlorobenzyl) - benzene with phenol. The intermediate 1,4 - bis - (α,α - dichlorobenzyl)-benzene is prepared either by chlorination of 1,4-dibenzyl benzene or by chlorination of 1,4-dibenzoyl benzene. The invention also comprises polycarbonates containing residues of the new tetraphenol. Example 2 describes the preparation of a polycarbonate resin by the reaction of phosgene; 1,4 - bis - (4,4<SP>11</SP> - dihydroxy - triphenyl - methyl)- benzene; and bis-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane.
