In an arrangement for running a steam turbine up to speed at a desired rate of acceleration a steam turbine 10, a steam valve 12 is positioned by a servo-motor 22 controlled by a comparator 20 responsive to the difference between an intended acceleration signal F2 from an intended acceleration signal-producing apparatus 24 and an actual acceleration signal F1 derived from the output of a tachogenerator 16 via a differentiating circuit 18.
