Abstract

Shaped, non-porous elastomeric polyurethanes prepared by reacting a hydroxyl-containing compound and a chain extending agent containing amino groups and/or hydroxyl groups with an organic polyisocyanate and shaping the reaction product are post-cured by heating in the substantial absence of oxygen. The heating may be performed in an atmosphere of nitrogen, argon, xenon, hydrazine, hydrogen or helium or in a vacuum. The hydroxyl containing compound may be a polyester, polyether, polythioether, polyesteramide or polyacetal. Many conventional polyisocyanates are specified. In an Example (1) butanediol and 4,41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate were added separately to polyethylene adipate, cast into a mould and chopped up. The chopped particles were injection moulded and cured in a vacuum oven at 110 DEG C. for 16 hours.
