Abstract

1,040,273. Continuous casting. UNITED STEEL CO. Ltd. Jan. 22, 1964 [Jan. 30, 1963], No. 3849/63. Heading B3F. A mechanism for reciprocating the mould of a continuous casting machine comprises a driving shaft 13, Fig. 4 (not shown), which carries a crank pin 14, located in a block 17 arranged to slide between parallel guides 18 of a rectangular frame 20 secured to a shaft 21. The shaft 21 forms part of a disc 23 in a slot of which slides a block 28. A pin 30 on the block 28 engages a boss 31 on the end of a mould actuating rod 11, which is constrained to move in a straight line by a guide 47 secured to the back plate 39. In operation, the reciprocation of the rod 11 is transmitted to the mould via rod 7 and the lever 4. The oscillatory driving motion produces a quick return movement of the rod 11 and the mould. Manual adjustment is provided to vary the throw of the crank pin 14 and of the pin 30. These adjustments permit the reciprocating speed of the mould to be varied, or the stroke or both. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the mould is oscillated about a fixed centre of curvature to produce a curved billet.
