Abstract

Surfaces are coated with a high molecular weight organic material by applying simultaneously or one after the other (e.g. by spraying, curtain coating or dipping) an emulsion of a high molecular weight organic material charged either positively or negatively and an emulsion or dispersion of an oppositely charged material. The surface coated may be metal, glass, stone, concrete, wood, foamed plastics, paper webs, webs of woven fabric, belts, walls, cisterns, floors and sea-going vessels. The surface may be a mould for the production of gloves. The emulsions and dispersions may include natural rubber styrene-butadiene copolymer, terpene resin, phenol-formaldehyde resin, asphalt, polystyrene, butyl rubber, polyvinyl acetate, nitrile rubber, cellulose fibres, zinc oxide, phenyl-B-naphthylamine tetramethyl thiuran disulphide, waterglass, ammonium caseinate, toluene, olein, diethanolamine, silica, cetyl pyridinium chloride and water. The coating may be waterproof, electrically conductive or bacteriostatic.
