[Also in Division B2] A method of applying a bituminous waterproof insulating coating to a surface comprises simultaneously spraying the surface with a bituminous emulsion, e.g. asphalt or tar, an electrolyte, e.g. acidulated water or a solution of mineral salts, as coagulant, in such a way that the bituminous emulsion mixes with the electrolyte at the moment the bituminous emulsion contacts the surface and forms a continuous coating. The bituminous emulsions may contain 2 to 20% natural or synthetic rubber. The coating may be applied to stones, plasterwork, wood and concrete and to an underlayer or between layers of other insulation material such as roofing paper impregnated with asphalt or tar, jute, cork, spun glass or plastic material, The method is particularly suitable for insulations for industrial buildings, waterworks, houses, tunnels and mines. The surface to be coated may be wet. As shown, a device suitable for the above method comprises nozzle 1 for spraying the emulsion with compressed air supplied by line 2 and nozzle 3 for spraying the electrolyte, the nozzle 1 slightly leading nozzle 3.
