Abstract

1,039,857. Tufting machines. SINGER CO. May 4, 1965 [May 6, 1964], No. 18634/65. Heading DIG. A tufting machine comprises electricallyactuated means for controlling the rate of yarn feed, and pattern mechanism for actuating the control means, said pattern mechanism including a pattern element mounted within a casing located separate from the tufting machine. The back 24 of a casing 21 housing the pattern mechanism supports a bracket 43 from which is cantilevered a horizontal tube 44, the face end of which carries a vertical bracket 45. A horizontal shaft 46, journalled in the brackets 43, 45, is driven by a motor 47 in synchronism with the main shaft of the tufting machine. Collars 48, 49 on shaft 46 support an endless pattern belt 50 driven by engagement of a line of holes 52 therein with radial pins 51 on collar 49. Tube 44 also carries vertical brackets 53 which support a pair of horizontal lamps 55 immediately beneath the uppermost part of belt 50. Brackets 58 on the back wall 24 support a casing 56 immediately above the uppermost part of belt 50. The bottom wall of casing 56 is formed with a line of holes, each of which is positioned beneath a respective one of a line of photo-cells 57 mounted within casing 56. The belt 50 is provided with a photographically-formed opaque pattern 68. Upon rotation of shaft 46, each photo-cell 57 is illuminated when a transparent portion of belt 50 is positioned beneath the corresponding hole in casing 56. The varying potentials thus generated serve to energize one or the other of respective magnetic clutches 17 and 19, Fig. 1 (not shown), for driving a pair of co-operating yarn feed rollers 15 either fast or slow. Casing 21 is ventilated by a fan 37 via a duct 40, air entering the casing by an opening 39 and leaving by an opening 42.
