Abstract

1,039,552. Bearings. MINSTER MACHINE CO. Feb. 4, 1964 [July 29, 1963], No. 4716/64. Heading F2A. A bearing for a member or slide 12 (Figs. 1 to 3, not shown) which is movable vertically in a frame 10 within a press, comprises a flat sliding bearing element 24 attached to the frame and defining a rectangular recess 40 containing a plurality of rollers 38 spaced apart from one another by a rectangular cage or carrier 36, the element 24 being separated from the bearing surface of the member 12 by a film of pressurized oil established by a pump 28 through conduits 32. Thrust acting normal to the bearing surfaces is partly carried by the element 24 to minimize stresses in areas engaged by the rollers. Alternatively, the element 24 may be either attached to the member 12 or free to move relative to the frame 10 and the member 12. The element 24 may be omitted and the sliding element of the bearing be constituted by the cage for the rollers. The rollers may be made of a resilient material, e.g. a synthetic plastics material or bonded glass-fibres, to allow the sliding element to take up an adequate proportion of thrust acting normal to the bearing surfaces. The rollers may be hollow (Fig. 7, not shown), and the cage for the rollers may be made of a resilient material, the rollers being disposed in a staggered formation on either side of the cage (Fig. 8, not shown). The bearing may be modified to form a bearing for a connecting-rod 18 (Figs. 9 to 11, not shown) coupled to a crankshaft 16, the rollers being replaced by balls 66. The bearing may be pre-loaded by a tapered bar 96 (Figs. 12 and 14, not shown) which is driven between a movable flat-member 94 and a stationary member supporting a rectilinearlymovable one 86, the rollers 80 being hollow and attached to a cage 82.
