In a shoe upper conforming machine having a work support for supporting an insole on the bottom of a last within a shoe upper and a pair of wiper arrangements which are movable inwardly of the last to wipe marginal portions of the upper across the bottom of the insole, e.g. as described in Specification 940,741, each wiper arrangement comprises a forepart wiper 26 (Figs. 7 and 12 and a ball wiper 82 which is an inclined flexible plate attached to a carrier 88 which is slidably mounted on the forepart wiper, the arrangement being such that the ball wiper 82 moves with the forepart wiper 26 when the latter moves inwardly of the last, but can move independently thereof in a longitiudnal direction so that adjustment to suit different length shoes is possible. Means are described for making such adjustment automatically. In Fig. 4, the upper is shown clamped on the last by gripper units 22, 24. The pair of forepart wipes 26 are detachably secured in a movable carrier 60, whose movements are guided by rollers 62 thereon engaging in cam slots 64 cut in the underside of cover plate 68, whereby the wipers move toewards and inwardly in a sweeping action. Fig. 13 shows the underside of a shoe and the position of the two ball wipers 82 before and after the wiping operation. Each ball wiping portion 82 of the wiper arrangement is mounted on a carrier 88 which is slidable on the forepart wiper 26, the carrier 88 having an arm 98 with roller 100 which engages in a cam slot 102 in member 104 secured to sliding bar 106. The latter are connected by flexible cables 114 through linkages (not shown) to the movable front assembly 140 which carries the heel clamping strap 136. When the work is in position, heelclamping strap 136 is pressed against the heel by pneumatic means, which, via the linkage and cables, automatically positions the two ball wipers 82 in accordance with the length of the shoe. As either one or the other of the ball wipers has to work slightly ahead of the other according to whether a left or right shoe is being wiped (see Fig. 13), manual adjustment is provided on the machine so that it can accommodate both left and right shoes. This is done by varying the effective length of the cable 114. Where each cable joins its sliding bar 106, an eccentrically mounted knob 134 is provided so that a 180 degrees rotation of the knob alters the effective length of the cable. Both knobs (only one shown) are marked L and R at diametrically opposite points and the operator turns both knobs so that L is uppermost when working on a left shoe.
