shoe. Ideally, the wipers should conform generally to i the shape of the last around the entire forepart of-the shoe and be moved inwardly over the shoe bottom substantially at right angles to the edge of the insole.
Machines presently. available for this operation have the Wipers disposed for equal movements from positions equally spaced from the center line of the machine. The wipers themselves have been generally shaped to give optimum results when utilized with regularly shaped shoes,
that is, shoes not having either extremely square or pointed foreparts. When operating on shoes of the usual sizes and shapes such'wiper configuration and movement affords substantially adequate wiping along all points of the fore'part of the shoe. However, when shoes having square or pointed foreparts are lasted there is necessarily considerable compromise with the ideal wiper movement for the sake of effecting a minimally adequate wiper motion along the whole of the margin of the forepart. Wipers specifically adapted for operating on such shoes may be used to replace the more regularly shaped wipers but the motion of the wipers generally remains the same. Therehave been modifications to lasting machines to allow altering of the motion of one or both wipers to effect wiping coverage which would otherwise not be had. However, even where a particular motion, such as an extended wiping on one side, has been introduced, and a special configuration of Wiper has been used, the range of sizes and styles of shoes on which an adequate operation can be performed by a single pair of Wipers is extremely limited.
Particular problems existing in certain areas of lasting, mentioned by way of example, include the square toe of a work shoe, the relatively square toe and size of an infants shoe forepart, and the narrow forepart and pointed toe of some styles, particularly in womens shoes. Another area where difiiculties exist is in the lasting of welt shoes, where a particular movement of the wipers is desired so that the upper will be pressed uniformly against the insole rib. The problem of welt shoes, furthermore,
is not restricted to unusual shapes of shoes.
According to a feature of this invention, individual ad justing means are provided in a lasting machine for the operating mechanismsof each of its wiper carriers to impart a variable motion to each wiper so as to accommodate an infinite variety of forepart sizes and styles, and to afford wiping movement to the extent desired and at angles relative to the edge of the insole more nearly approximating the ideal than has heretofore been possible. i The above and other features of the invention, including novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.

The wiper means of the present invention may be embodied in a lasting machine of the type shown in an application for United States Letters Patent of Raymond M. Bowler et al., Serial No. 194,064, filed May 11, 1962, to which reference may be had for details relative to the construction and operation of a typical machine to which the invention may be applied. However, it should be understood that the invention is not limited in respect of its applicability to machines of that particular type and, instead, is equally applicable to lasting machines of other types adapted to operate on either the forepart or the.
heel end of shoes.
The improved wiper means illustrated in the drawings includes a pair of wipers 2 and 4 mounted in a pair of carriers 6 and 8, respectively, which are slidably received in a wiper head 10 between a frame member 12 and a cover plate 14. The carriers 6, 8 are provided with cam rolls 20, 22, 24 and 26 mounted on pins extending upward lyfrom the carriers 6, 8. The rolls are received-in cam slots 30, 32, 34 and 36 in the underside of the cover plate 14 to guide the carriers 6, 8 and wipers 2, 4 in their advancing and closing movements.
The carriers 6, 8 are connected, respectively, by links 40, 42 to levers 44, 46 which are pivotally disposed on fulcrums 48, 50 secured to the cover plate 14. The cover plate 14 is urged rearwardly (i.e. upwardly as viewed in FIG. 1) by two springs 52, 54 extending from opposite rear corners of the cover plate 14 to pins upstanding from the frame 12. A cross bar 56 fixed to the end of a rod 58, which extends forwardly from a mover (not shown) is adapted to engage an after face of the cover plate 14.
Fixedly attached to the frame 12 are guide members 60, 62 slidably retaining the cover plate 14. Brackets 64, 66 are secured to the guide members ,62, respectively, and pivotally support studs 65, 67 which rotatably and pivtally support shafts 68, 70. The forward ends of the shafts 68, 70 are provided with knurled knobs 72, 74.
The rearward ends of the shafts 68, 70 are threaded into lugs 76, 78 which mount pins 80, 82 slidably disposed in slots 84, 86 in the levers 44, 4:6. The pins 80, 82 each provided with a groove 79 receiving a pin 81 which prevents axial movement of the shaft in the cap 83,
A detailed description of the adjusting mechanism and its method of operation follows. For the sakeof simplicity reference will be made to the right side wiper 4, it being understood that the left side wiper and its associated mechanism operate in the same manner:
In preparing the wipers for operation, the operator adjusts the knobs 94 and 74 to position the wiper 4 in accordance with the size and contour of the shoe and the wiping motion to be applied to it.
Assuming for purposes of explanation that an extended wiper motion is desired of the right side wiper 4, the operator turns the knob 94 in a clockwise direction.
