Abstract

Novel 9,11-unsaturated steroids including a structure represented by the formula <FORM:1039236/C2/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group or an epoxy bridge attached at C3 are obtained by treating a 9,11-saturated steroid represented by the partial formula <FORM:1039236/C2/2> with nitrous acid; e.g. an alkali metal nitrite in the presence of an acid in an inert solvent.
