Heading A5R] A dental instrument holder comprises a body 1 consisting of several like containers 114 for dental instruments (e.g. drills, syringes, &C .) and a control box 14 controlling the supply of power to the instruments, and is supported by a vertically extendable suspension means from a trolley 6 which runs on a horizontal overhead rail 7. the rail 7 being supported by either a pair of rails 8 attached to the ceiling or a horizontal arm (Fig. 6 not shown) pivotal about a vertical axis so that the position of the holder may be adjusted horizontally and vertically. The suspension means comprises a vertical cylinder 3 secured to the body 1 and a piston 4 the rod of which is connected to the trolley 6. The body is raised on supplying compressed air to the cylinder above the piston and lowered under gravity when the air in the cylinder above the piston is vented to atmosphere. Each of the containers 114 houses a rotatable pulley (Figs. 2 and 3 not shown) on which is wound an electric cable or hose carrying at one end a dental instrument which normally projects from the casing. The other end of the cable or hose is connected via an electromagnetic valve and the control box with an appropriate source of power. As an instrument is withdrawn from its container, its cable or hose unwinds from the pulley and, preferably, the electromagnetic valve is simultaneously opened to supply power to the instrument. On releasing the instrument, the pulley automatically winds up the hose or cable and returns the instrument to the container.
