Abstract

1,038,702. Non-explosive bullets. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. (Canadian Industries Ltd. of Canada). Feb. 3, 1965 [Feb. 6, 1964], No. 5136/64. Heading F3A. An expanding bullet comprising a hard metal jacket 1 and a core 2 of malleable metal has a tip 4 of resilient, mouldable, synthetic, thermoplastic material, e.g. polyethylene or nylon. The jacket 1 may be made of gilding metal and the core of lead. The bullet may be assembled and moulded in a series of dies. In the first die a lead cylinder is dropped into a tube of gilding metal having a closed end and a punch is lowered to form the cylinder to the shape of the tube.. The tube is then transferred to a swaging die (12) to shape the nose of the bullet. A square sectioned pin (14) is used to form a recess in the nose. The tips 4 may be placed in sockets (15) in a plate (16), the jacketed bullets being placed in a holder (17) and on depressing a block (19), the tips 4 are forced into the bullets. In a modification, the tip is moulded in a cavity (31) (Fig. 8, not shown) formed in the bullet nose, the molten thermoplastic being introduced through a channel (30) in a plate (27) while the bullet is supported in a block (28). Lead alloys containing tin or antimony may be used for the core and alloys such as coppernickel and plated or clad steel may form the jacket. Suitable thermoplastics for the tip are polyolefines, polyamides, polystyrenes, vinyl, acrylonitrile butyldiene styrene and polyurethane polymers.
