An ice-making machine comprises a plurality of downwardly open moulds 51 supported by a grid 50 with their lower ends co-operating with the downwardly divergent grid openings, electric heating elements 53 embedded in the grid, an evaporator 47 for cooling the upper, substantially closed ends of the moulds and means 25 for spraying water upwardly into the moulds. Means 25 comprises a conduit 33 having perforations along its upper side mounted for rotation on the discharge conduit 24 of a pump 23, rotation of conduit 33 being produced by oppositely directed sprays of water from openings 35 in the ends of the conduit. Pump 23 withdraws water from a tank 10 which is supplied with water through pipe 38 via a valve 37 which is controlled by a switch 21a operated by the pressure in an air trap 20, immersed in the tank to limit the maximum water level. An electric control circuit (Fig. 5, not shown) is provided to energize the refrigerant compressor 41 and pump 23 and includes timing means which are energized by a thermostat 59 when an appropriate evaporator temperature is reached and at a predetermined time thereafter de-energize the compressor and pump and energize heaters 53 and further heaters 56 (Fig. 4, not shown) in contact with the evaporator. The released ice-blocks fall on to an inclined grid 14 which directs them past a pivoted flap 16 into a storage bin 61 having a thermostat 62 for preventing a further ice-making cycle when the bin is full. The tank 10 is automatically drained at the end of each ice-making cycle by a valve controlled drain 17.
