1394839 Ice-making KING-SEELEY THERMOS CO 18 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 48050/72 Heading F4H In an ice-making apparatus water is sprayed from a rotary spray bar 280 Fig. 5 upwardly into the lower open ends of inverted ice-forming moulds 242 Fig. 6 wherein during a freezing cycle it is frozen by tubing 234 of an evaporator (36) of a compression refrigeration system, which evaporator is supported within a tank 144 above the moulds which retains water in heat transfer relationship to the moulds to effect release of the ice therefrom during a harvest cycle by water heated in a tank 146 Fig. 16 by the refrigerants passing from the compressor to the condenser and passed by a line 168 to the tank 144. The tank 144 has drainage holes for allowing controlled flow of water into a lower sump 142 to cause dilution of make-up water by the thawing water for the next successive freezing cycle and an additional excess quantity of water passes to the sump before each cycle to reduce the accumulation of foreign material in the water system by passing to a drain 140. A pump 170 passes water from the sump to the rotatable spray bar, and a partition 258 is disposed between the bar and sump to receive the ice from the moulds and direct them via an opening 198 to a discharge shoot 268. A three-way valve 70 selectively operating in response to an electrically controlled system links the sump with the tank 144 during the freezing cycle or to the external drain 140 during the harvest cycle. An enclosure formed of a moulded synthetic polymeric material and including rigidifying means is described which enclosure nests the water and evaporator-holding tank 144 within its upper end, contains the moulds, spray bar, partition and defines the sump in its lower portion.
