Abstract

1,038,230. Egg flats. PACKAGING CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Dec. 5, 1963 [Dec. 21, 1962], No. 48056/63. Heading B8P. A moulded pulp filler flat comprises a sheet with alternate rows of pockets 12 and posts 14, and solid projections 28 extending upwardly from the plane of the sheet and disposed outwardly of the terminal row 14a of posts so that filler flats can be easily removed from rested relationship with respect to each other. Extending partially between the posts 14a are rows of half-pockets 16 between which are finger grip recesses 18 to facilitate manipulation. Extending transverse to the rows of half-pockets are rows of half-posts 20. When the loaded flats are stacked in an egg case alternate flats are rotated through 90 degrees so that the bottom of a pocket 12 rests on the top of a post 14. The projections 28 which are preferably attached to the terminal posts 14a act as a fulcrum (Fig. 4) when the flat above is removed and also space the nested flats to prevent jamming. Additional spacing means may be provided such as an annular shoulder 30 in the interior of the posts, projections 22a between the pockets (Fig. 9, not shown) and/or narrow webs 32 diametrically spanning the bottom of each pocket (Fig. 10, not shown). Each post 14a in the terminal row, except the central one, may have an interior portion 31 which is angularly inclined with respect to both the side and top portions of the post. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 10 (not shown) the projections 33 are not attached to the terminal posts 14a.
