Abstract
An emulsifier for a water in oil emulsion comprises a monofatty acid ester of an unsaturated fatty acid with a symmetrical or asymmetrical disubstituted hydroxalkylurea or hydroxyalkylthiourea. Two general formulae for the esters are <FORM:1038015/A5-A6/1> where X, Y may be the same or different and are each one of the following <FORM:1038015/A5-A6/2> where n > 1, m \sF 1 and R is an alkyl radical having at least 10 carbon atoms which is preferably unsaturated and may contain hydroxyl groups. The urea oxygen may be replaced by sulphur. The emulsifier may be prepared by thermal or catalytic esterification of urea derivatives, by ester interchange from fatty acid esters by esterification via a corresponding acid chloride or by preparing an amine ester hydrochloride and converting the amino group to urea using cyanates. 16 examples of emulsifier are given.
