Abstract

In a process for crystallizing p-aminophenol from solution the crystallization is conducted in the presence of the sodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. During the crystallisation a reducing agent such as sodium hydrosulphite or sodium sulphite may be added. In an example p-aminophenol, sodium sulphite, sodium hydrosulphite, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid sodium salt, decolorising carbon and water are heated in a nitrogen atmosphere under reflux. The solution is filtered, further sodium hydrosulphite is added and the p-aminophenol allowed to crystallize.
