Abstract
In storing bromine in stainless steel containers a nitrogen oxide e.g. below 0.1% is mixed with the bromine to prevent corrosion of the container. The nitrogen oxide may be NO, N2O, NO2, NO2, N2O3 and may be added as a gas or by agitating fuming nitric acid with bromine.ALSO:In storing bromine in stainless steel containers a nitrogen oxide, e.g. below 0.1%, is mixed with the bromine. The containers may be of chromium, nickel or molybdenum steels and the nitrogen oxide may be N2O, NO, NO2 or N2O3. The oxide may be added by bubbling gas through bromine or by agitating fuming nitric acid with bromine, when after phase separation, excess nitric acid is removed. The container may have lead fittings and the outside may be coated with bromine-resistant material, e.g. silver or lead.
