Abstract
Paper is made from man-made fibres, by processing the fibres into a batt on a conventional papermaking machine in association with a lubricant and a bonding material. The bonding material comprises at least one thermoplastic having a melting point higher than that of the lubricant and is not miscible with the lubricant when liquefied. The fibres are bonded together by heating the batt above the melting point of the thermoplastic, so that lubricant melts first and coats the fibres and the thermoplastic melts and moves along the lubricant to the point where the fibres intersect, and then cooling the batt. The bonding agent may be added in the form of staple fibres, and the lubricant may be applied to them. Suitable man-made fibres are: polyamide fibres, polyester fibres, polyacrylic copolymer fibres, man-made cellulosic fibres, and glass fibres. They may be mixed with natural fibres. The thermoplastic bonding agent may be the polyamide obtained by condensing dimerized and trimerized unsaturated sebacic acids with polyamines. Suitable lubricants are: alkylglycol phthalates, natural or synthetic resins, balsam resin ammonium soap, and polyesters derived from adipic, sebacic or phthalic acid. In another embodiment, the lubricant is first applied to fibres of nylon, and fibres of the above polyamide bonding agent are then added.
