Abstract

Paper is formed from synthetic fibres, glass fibres and mixtures of these fibres with natural fibres by processing the fibres into a bath on a paper-making machine in association with a lubricant in the form of a natural or synthetic resin-like or wax-like material and with an adhesive in the form of a condensable and/or polymerizable or esterifiable material having a higher melting point than the lubricant, the lubricant and adhesive being immiscible in the fluid state when heat is applied, exposing the fibres to a temperature of 50-120 DEG C. so that a coating of liquefied lubricant is formed on the fibres along which the melted adhesive moves to the points where the fibres intersect, hardening the adhesive, and if necessary washing out the lubricant. Initially some or all of the fibres may be beaten in the lubricant and then centrifuged to remove the surplus lubricant. The fibres may then be steeped in the adhesive to provide a second coating, or the adhesive may be added in fibre or granular form. Alternatively the adhesive may be in fibre form coated with the lubricant or a homogeneous mixture of the two additives may be formed into threads or powder. The bath may be heated by being passed through heated rollers. The fibres may be made of regenerated cellulose, a polyamide, a polyester, a polyvinyl, an acrylic polymer, a polyolefin or a mixed polymer. Lubricants mentioned are paraffin wax, silicone emulsions, ammonia, or other alkali resin soaps, and an alkyl glycol phthalate, adipate or sebarate. Suitable adhesives are isocyanates mixed with polyesters, or an epoxy resin and a polyester.
