Abstract

<PICT:1036610/C4-C5/1> A tubular reactor, e.g. for the pyrolysis or reforming of hydrocarbons, comprises two banks of vertical tubes 31 and 32 arranged in two radiant zones 20 and 21 defined by inner and outer walls 13, 14 and 11, 12 respectively, bearing the radiant burners 18 and an upper convection zone 30 horizontally offset from the radiant zones and having a serpentine conduit 35 communicating with the vertical tubes by cross-over means 36. In a modification the convection zone is divided into two separate zones by a central wall, each convection zone being in communication with one radiant zone and having its own serpentine conduit. Excess heat may be recovered in a further conduit or conduits 38. The tubes 31 and 32 may be arranged for a single pass of hydrocarbon through the reactor or several passes and for reforming may contain a catalyst.
