Abstract

Triaryl phosphino-propionic acid betaines are prepared by mixing acrylic acid or an a -alkyl or a -aryl derivative thereof with a triaryl phosphine optionally at an elevated temperature of up to about 80 DEG C. and/or in the presence of a solvent and then optionally heating the reaction mixture up to about 140 DEG C. and subsequently separating the reaction product. Acids specified acrylic acid a -methacrylic acid and a -phenylacrylic acid, specified triazyl phosphines are triphenyl phosphine, tritolyl phosphine and trio-chlorophenyl phosphine and suitable solvents are dioxan, tetrahydrofuran, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile and acetone. BETA-Carbethoxyethyl - triphenyl phosphoniumchloride and -iodide are obtained by boiling the reaction product of acrylic acid and triphenyl phosphine with ethanolic hydrochloric acid and alcoholic ethyl iodide respectively. The phosphino betaine products may be applied as accelerators in the hardening of unsaturated polyester resins, as flame protection agents and pest control agents for wood, textiles and synthetic resins.
