Abstract
Compounds of formula PnNn-1Cl2n+3 where n is greater than 1, are prepared by reacting in an inert solvent, PCl5 and a stoichiometric deficiency of NH4Cl, the latter being obtained (a) as by-product from reacting NH3, or methanol and NH3, with the compounds PnNn-1Cl2n+3 and (PNCL2)x, e.g. a crude mixture, (b) by spray drying an aqueous solution of NH4Cl or (c) by sublimation of NH4Cl. The solvent may be chlorobenzene, toluene, or xylene. The products may be reacted with methanol and NH3 to give derivatives used for flame-proofing cellulosic fibres.
