Abstract

A wear resistant sliding surface material is produced by disposing a wire mesh sieve so that its lower surface is parallel to and at a selected distance from the working surface of a pressure applying flat plate, distributing through the sieve mesh and into the space so formed between the two surfaces a powder comprising polytetrafluoroethylene resin until the space is uniformly filled, removing the sieve to leave a first uniformly distributed powder layer, pressure bonding the powder layer so formed to a first side of a sheet of mesh fabric e.g. a metal wire mesh, to form an integral laminated material and heating the integral laminated material to cause sintering thereof. The powder may also contain at least one inorganic filler e.g. graphite powder, molybdenum, lead, cadmium, molybdenum disulphide or powdered glass. A second uniformly distributed layer may be formed in the same manner as the first, and may be pressure bonded to a second side of the sheet of mesh fabric prior to heating the so formed integral laminated material to cause sintering thereof. A structure having a surface formed of the wear resistant sliding surface material may be formed by integrally and securely bonding, by means of an adhesive, the mesh fabric of the material formed as described above to a surface of a structure. The structure may comprise a backing structure, a mesh fabric e.g. a metal wire mesh, bonded to the backing structure by means of an adhesive, and a layer of a wear resistant material consisting of polytetrafluoro ethylene resin, the layer being integrally bonded with the mesh fabric, and the outer, exposed surface of the layer constituting a wear-resistant sliding surface.
