Abstract
1,035,385. I.C. engine intake air heaters. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. June 17, 1965 [June 22, 1964], No. 25805/64. Heading FIB. [Also in Division H2] In a cold start system in which fuel is supplied from a gravity supply tank 1 to an electrical igniter 24 in the intake manifold 30 and burnt therein to pre-heat the intake air, the delivery of fuel to the igniter is controlled by a vent valve 12, Fig. 2, of the tank 1 which is opened when a switch 9 in he circuit of the igniter is closed. The vent valve 12 is carried by the end 11 of a plunger 10 carrying switch contact plate 18, the valve 12 normally seating on a seat 15 to close the air vent 9. The igniter Fig. 4 (not shown) comprises an electrical heating coil 33 surrounding a core containing a rod 34 holding a ball valve 36 closed. When plunger 10 is depressed to open valve 12 to permit fuel to flow from tank 1 and energize heater 33, the valve 36 remains closed until opened by differential expansion between rod 34 and the surrounding core. The fuel then flows through the igniter and is ignited by the coil 33. After the engine has started, release of the plunger 10 closes vent valve 12 to cut off the fuel supply. The tank 1 is filled through a pipe 4 connected to the overspill of a fuel ignition pump.
