Abstract

Pentaerythritol polyglycols are prepared by heating a solution of pentaerythritol in the dimethyl ether of diethylene glycol to its boiling point under atmospheric pressure while purging with an inert gas, introducing ethylene oxide into the solution while continuing the inert gas purge and maintaining the solution substantially at its boiling point, and subsequently removing the dimethyl ether of diethylene glycol by distillation. In a preferred embodiment, 4 to 5 moles of ethylene oxide are employed, the resulting adduct is heated to a temperature of 165 DEG C. while purging with an inert gas and ethylene oxide is introduced into the liquid adduct while the adduct is maintained at a temperature of 165 DEG C. under continued inert gas purge.
