Abstract

Dipyridylium quaternary salts of the formula: <FORM:0926326/IV(a)/1> where X- is an anionic radical are obtained by heating 2,21-dipyridyl with an excess of an ethylene glycol diester at a pressure above atmospheric and at a temperature above the boiling point of the diester. The preparation of the dibromide salt is described.
