Abstract
1,034,984. Marine propellers. J. M. LANGHAM. April 26, 1965 [May 4, 1964], No. 18383/64. Heading B7V. A marine propeller comprises a helicallywound electric heating-element 4 (Fig. 1, not shown), encased in refractory material, e.g. a ceramic substance, which is electrically non-conducting, and embedded in the boss 1 of the propeller adjacent a bore for a driving shaft 2 so that the boss can be heated uniformly in a controlled manner to effect removal of the propeller from said shaft, the propeller being retained on the shaft by a nut 3 of the power-operated type. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the element 4 is embedded in refractory material 6 which fills an annular cavity or chamber 7 formed in the boss adjacent said bore. Alternatively, heating of the boss is effected by a plurality of axiallyorientated electric resistive - track elements which are lodged in bores 8 (Fig. 3, not shown), said elements being encased in refractory material which may be protected by a sheath of metal, e.g. stainless steel.
