Abstract

1,034,919. Lasers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 17, 1964 [Sept. 20, 1963], No. 38007/64. Heading H3B. In order to produce only the required dominant mode in a gas laser, the laser radiation path between opposed reflecting members of the optical cavity of the laser has a substantially square cross-section. In the arrangement of Fig. 1, a quartz block 1 is provided with a duct 2 of circular cross-section containing a heliumneon gas mixture, the ends of the duct being closed by quartz blocks 11, 12 coated with dichroic layers 13, 14 as reflecting members for the desired laser wavelength. In order to obtain only the dominant transverse electromagnetic mode glass tubes 15, 16 of square cross-section are secured in the ends of the duct to define the laser light path between members 13, 14 which may be confocal curved mirrors. In the arrangement of Fig. 3 (not shown), a single square cross-section tube is used between the lateral ducts 3, 4 instead of tubes 15, 16. A series of masks may be provided in the duct 2, each being provided with a square hole. Alternatively, the masking action may be obtained by the insertion of a number of masking elements in the duct which act in combination to provide a square cross-section path.
