Abstract

The cryogenic properties of superconductive alloys are improved by electrolytically liberating hydrogen on the alloy as a cathode in a hydrogen liberating electrolyte, such as an aqueous solution of HF, HCl, HNO3 and/or H2SO4 in concentration 5 to 25%, e.g. using a current density of 0.1 to 5 amps/sq cm. The alloy is composed of at least one member selected from Ti, V, Nb, Zr, La, Ta, Th and U, and one different member of the group consisting of each of the foregoing members and Al, Zn, Ga, Cd, In, Sn, Hg, Th and Pb. Examples specified are bi-metallic alloy in wire form comprising 10 to 65% Zr and balance Nb, with hydrogen present in sufficient amount to provide a 5 to 15% greater volume in the alloy, and the bi-metallic compound Nb3 Sn. The bi-metallic Zr-Nb alloy may be subsequently hot and cold worked with intermediate anneals.
