Abstract

1,034,480. Spinning polyvinyl chloride. SNIA VISCOSA SOC. NAZIONALE INDUSTRIA APPLICAZONI VISCOSA S.p.A. Dec. 11, 1963 [Dec. 24, 1962], No. 48967/63. Heading B5B. Filaments formed of polyvinyl chloride containing 20-40% crystalline fraction are made by dissolving the polymer at a temperature of 80-200‹ C. in tetrahydrofuran or cyclohexanone, and spinning the viscous solution so formed into a coagulating bath maintained at a temperature of 60-150‹ C. constituted by an aqueous solution of ammonium sulphocyanide, alkali-metal sulphocyanide or mixtures thereof, or by an aqueous solution of zinc chloride, and then stretching the spun filaments at a temperature not less than 100‹ C. to a ratio of 1: 4 to 1: 11. The concentration of polyvinyl chloride in the spinning solution may be 5-40% by weight and the salt concentration in the coagulating bath may be 10-70% by weight. The filaments may be stretched at 100-180‹ C. in boiling water or ethylene glycol. Spinning solvent may be recovered from the coagulating bath, which should not contain more than 22% by weight of solvent, by distillation or solvent extraction.
