A cabinet for the suspension filing of drawings or the like comprises a number of bars 5 ... 9, Fig. 1, with staggered filing pins 10, 11 thereon, the bar 9 being fixed and the remainder carried by slidable members 20 ... 23 so that compartments A ... D formed by the bars can be opened to insert, remove or inspect drawings. The members 20 ... 23 have wheels 25, Fig. 2 (not shown), running on guides 26 and are held in the closed position by latches 30 on each member engaging pins 33 on the adjacent member. The latches 30 can be selectively released for opening a particular compartment and for this purpose a shaft 40 can be rotated by a knob 44 so as to position one of a number of axially and angularly displaced projections 41, 42 on the shaft adjacent to a shoulder 34 on the latch 30 to be released. The shaft 40 is slidable by means of a push button 50 in the knob 44 against the action of a spring 51, and the axial movement of the shaft causes the selected latch 30 to be released by the corresponding projection 41 &c. Each carrier member 20 of the first bar is attached to an endless cable, chain or the like passing over pulleys or sprockets 61, 62 on fixed axes, the arrangement ensuring parallel movement without jamming of the carriers 20 and bar 5 and also of the other carriers since they are latched to carriers 20. A coiled spring on the shaft 63 of the pulleys 61 causes bar 5 and bars latched thereto to move towards opening positions when a selected latch is released. Spring-ball detents 74, Fig. 1, each engage recess 71 in the side of a member 20 to stop such movement with the pins 10, 11 of the compartment being opened still overlapping. To complete the opening, a pull has to be exerted on the bar 5.
