Abstract

Monomeric formaldehyde is prepared by conveying a mixture of pulverulent paraformaldehyde and from 1 to 10% by weight, based on the paraformaldehyde, of an inert organic substance, which has a boiling point of 250 DEG to 300 DEG C. and is liquid at 100 DEG to 160 DEG C., by means of a screw conveyer through a heating zone of 100 DEG to 160 DEG C. and discharging, at the end of said zone, gaseous monomeric formaldehyde and 2 to 20% by weight, based upon the supplied paraformaldehyde, of unreacted polymeric formaldehyde. Specified inert organic substances, which are preferably non-solvents for paraformaldehyde, are paraffins, waxes, fats, stearins, fatty acids and fatty alcohols. The pyrolysis may be effected at atmospheric or under reduced pressure and, preferably, the formaldehyde partial pressure is maintained below 300 mm. Hg.
